The condition progresses in stages. Mild symptoms occur, usually some mild swelling and discomfort. An attack may happen occasionally, which is a 48 to 72 period of increased swelling and pain. Advanced gout is more or less a constant condition.

Gout Pain Relief Through Ayurvedic Medicine

gout pain

Gout pain relief is available not only through conventional western medicine, but also through alternative medicines such as the ancient form of ayurvedic medicine. In ayurvedic medicine, gout is referred to as vatrakta.

Vatrakta is indicated biochemically of:

- An augmentation in the concentration level of serum urate.

- Recurrent acute pain attacks within the joints, which may become persistent and chronic in nature.

- Occurrence of monosodium urate mono hydrate crystals within the fluid spaces inside the joints at the time of an acute attack.

Ayurvedic gout pain relief is not a generalized form of treatment and is therefore not the same for everyone. The recommended treatments vary from person to patient depending on the physical and psychological health and status of the individual. However, there are certain single and compound formulations that are used for gout pain relief as well as to minimize other symptoms of the condition. Some of the more commonly used formulations are:

Can Pets Get Dementia?

Can Pets Get Dementia?

Thanks to improved nutrition, better veterinary care, and safer home environments, household pets are living longer than ever. And like humans, as animals grow older, their brains undergo the normal structural and functional changes that accompany age -- all of which can alter memory and behavior.

Senility is prevalent amongst older animals. As Kim Campbell Thornton from MSNBC notes, recent research has shown that nearly a third of 11- and 12-year-old dogs and two-thirds of 15- and 16-year-old dogs have significant cognitive impairment, which is commonly termed "cognitive dysfunction syndrome" (CDS). Thornton suggests helpful tips for pet owners, including how to spot signs of dementia (disorientation, altered sleep habits, etc) and how to cope (feeding pets a better diet, maintaining a routine, keeping pets stimulated through play and trick teaching, etc).

STD Testing

STD Testing

Things to know about STD testing centers

If you're sexually active, getting regular STD testing is a wise idea. STD tests can detect conditions that are currently asymptomatic. Also, since early detection is key to the successful treatment of many STDs, it is very important that you see a doctor if you have any symptoms that concern you.

The most common STD tests administered by doctors are screenings for gonorrhea and chlamydia, which are highly recommended if you've recently had sexual contact with a new partner or if you have multiple sex partners. Your doctor will test for other sexually transmitted diseases at his or her discretion, based on your risk factors for contracting them. You can also ask to be tested for specific diseases, such as HIV, scabies, pubic lice and syphilis.

Coffee With Cream, Sugar ... and Viagra?

Coffee With Cream, Sugar ... and Viagra?

Oh dear--weird news to tell you about this morning ... as you're sipping your latte. Imagine drinking Viagra-spiked coffee. Wait until you hear this story (which gives a whole new meaning to a "cup of Joe")...

****

Coffee With Cream, Sugar ... and Viagra?

According to reports, more than 900 boxes of Viagra-laced coffee have been confiscated in Malaysia. The coffee was being marketed as an "energy booster," and "beneficial to men." So far, there's no word about the coffee reaching the U.S.--whew.

But, you know, after the cookie dough E. Coli scandal, I sort of have a smug "what's next?" attitude about the safety of our food. Perhaps this is why I'm really loving buying local whenever possible, like the coffee I buy from a micro roaster in Seattle that delivers their beans via bicycle to my doorstep! Cute, huh?

How To Awaken Your Senses

How To Awaken Your Senses

Image of a woman dressed in white breathing in the fresh air with the ocean in the background.

One way to remain youthful is to keep our five senses alert. But too often rather than opening, we shut ourselves down. As a result our internal and external environments lose their vibrancy and in the process, our own zest for life can be dulled. The good news: with these sensory exercises you’ll give yourself a boost and be able to more fully tune into the world around you.

Try it:

OPEN HEARING

This means listening to the whole range and variety of sound vibrations that surround us. It’s not just music that affects mood; every noise that enters us leaves its mark. If you train yourself to appreciate all sound, you will be less likely to regard noise as an irritation and more likely to stay open and embrace it as a living experience.

Lowering Your Cancer Risk

Lowering Your Cancer Risk

Good news regarding the war on cancer: In the last decade, knowledge of the cancer process in humans has "significantly deepened," says Dr. John Potter, Head of the Cancer Prevention Research Program at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Community Medicine at the University of Washington.

"Cancer is often a product of nutrient-gene interaction," says Dr. Potter. "It's true that some people are born at higher risk for certain cancers, while some lead lives that raise their risk even further. But the important thing to remember is that many; perhaps all of us can profoundly decrease our cancer risk by making changes to what we eat and drink and how we live."

Are New Year's Resolutions Helpful?

Are New Year's Resolutions Helpful?

I interviewed a random population of women and men of various ages and found that most survey participants were not making any resolutions this year. Here were some of the reasons: “I never keep them,” “Why procrastinate until New Year? If it’s important, I do it today,” “I don’t need the stress of something new on my to-do list.” “They’re born out of a weakness; it’s like I jumpstart my weakness.”

Perhaps, it’s time to stop setting goals that interfere with self-acceptance or in other words, make you feel like you don’t measure up and never will. Sometimes it is better to supercharge what is healthy than heal what is sick. One of those interviewed explained, “I notice that very few people make kindness or service to others a resolution. It’s mostly about the self. As a hair stylist, I try to give a free hair cut every week to someone who can’t afford it.”

Natalism, Alcoholism, & Public Health

Natalism, Alcoholism, & Public Health

Many tittering newscasters reported on a recent Russian initiative to shore up a declining population by encouraging workers to take a day off to "make babies:"

Today has been declared the Day of Conception in Ulyanovsk, Lenin's birthplace, when couples are told go to home and multiply. If they succeed they could win a car, cash or a fridge. Under the city council's "Give Birth to a Patriot" scheme, those who give birth on June 12, Lenin's birthday, will get a prize.

I guess the Putin Youth needs new members. The story reminded me of Vichy France's natalist policy, as related in Paul V. Dutton's book on the US and French health care systems. Apparently the political class there was deeply upset by "decadent" urban regions' failure to keep up with the birth rate in rural areas.

Stair Lift

Stair Lift

Choosing a Stair Lift for your home or business

Being bound to a wheelchair or suffering mobility problems can significantly reduce where a person can go, even in his or her own home. Installing a wheelchair lift can help people in wheelchairs or those who use walking canes or medical walkers access other areas of their homes.

Handicap stair lifts can be beneficial for the following reasons:

They reduce the risk of trips, slips and falls.

They help alleviate ankle stress, leg pain and exhaustion from walking up and down stairs.

They allow for more freedom in the home.

Stair lifts can be adapted to fit your home. Stair chair lifts can take you up the stairs and around the bend to the very top of a curved staircase. And straight stair lifts will do the trick on straight stairs, no matter how long or how steep.

Here's how it works: Each set of 30 bracelets cost $20 and comes with a 23-page booklet. The bracelets are color coded, and the idea is to wear the multicolored bracelets on one hand, eat a certain food group and move that bracelet to the other wrist.

I stumbled upon these bracelets while perusing Diet Blog and my first thought was, Really? Is it that hard to keep count of how many veggies you eat?

Would you buy these bracelets to lose weight? How do you keep track of how many fruits and veggies you eat per day?

Confession Time: How Caloric Was Your Valentine's Day?

Confession Time: How Caloric Was Your Valentine's Day?

Here's my rule: I don't worry too much about "healthy eating" on holidays. Where I'd normally order a salad at a restaurant, I'll get the thing on the menu with rich cream sauce. Heck, everyone deserves to break the rules sometimes--even the health conscious. I didn't go out to eat (remember my eat-at-home challenge), but I did splurge. I'll tell you mine, if you tell me yours!

****

Unfortunately, I didn't get to make the romantic V-day dinner I had planned. I'd forgotten that we had family coming up to visit over the weekend--which was lots of fun, but not a great time for a romantic dinner for two. So, that will be rescheduled for later in the week. But, I did make a fabulous batch of soft tacos and salad with roasted beets (it really was a delicious meal, even if it sounds kind of odd for Valentine's Day).

Weekly Health Tip: Why Trans Fats Are the Bad Guys

Surely you've heard the bad news about trans fats.Weekly Health Tip: Why Trans Fats Are the Bad Guys New York City has banned their use in restaurants. Many state governments have taken action to limit their consumption and use in mass-produced foods. And health experts around the world agree that their presence in foods should be reduced to trace amounts, if not eliminated. Why does this kind of fat inspire dire health warnings and legal action? Because trans fats raise the risk of coronary heart disease, and play no positive nutritional role. Most trans fats are created by adding hydrogen to certain unsaturated fats. The hydrogen makes these fats slower to spoil on a store shelf or in a restaurant pantry than other fats, which is why trans fats had been used in many packaged foods and restaurant cooking. These partially hydrogenated fats raise the level of LDL cholesterol, which is bad for your arteries, and lower the level of HDL cholesterol, which is beneficial to your arteries. Numerous studies have found that people who consume a lot of trans fats have a higher risk of developing plaques in their arteries, which leads to coronary heart disease. And that's why trans fats are the outlaws of the nutritional world!

Causes of Dry Eyes

If you experience dry eyes, you’re certainly not alone. It’s estimated 12 million people in the United States experience the symptoms of dry eyes – most of them women over sixty. In fact, it’s one of the most common reasons that people visit their eye doctor. One of the main causes of dry eyes is an imbalance in the tear mechanism.

Those who suffer with the condition may have difficulty moving their eyelids, are sensitive to bright lights, and find it difficult to read. In many cases, the dry-eye condition, known as keratoconjuctivitis sicca, accompanies other problems such as arthritis and thyroid disease associated with bulging eyes. It can also be caused by a vitamin A deficiency.

Weight Loss: Does Your Diet Really Work?

Weight loss commercials, infomercials and magazine ads proliferate. Newscasters and doctors shake their heads sadly and inform us that we, as a nation, or over weight. Do any of these diets, products and programs work?

The answer is yes and no. Some of the diets work, at least as long as you follow them. Some of them let you lose weight, but pack on the fat, cholesterol and sodium. Some of them take your money and don’t deliver. What are we supposed to do?

First, let me list a couple of diets. The grapefruit diet is the first one I remember. I was a kid, so it’s through a child’s eyes. I saw adults looking for grapefruits, in winter, in West Virginia. Believe me, that winter, in the late 1970s, there were a lot of frustrated adults, and not many of them lost any weight. They did lose a lot of money.

Heart Blockage

What is heart blockage? Is it a disease or just the symptom of a disease? What are the causes, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment that pertain to heart blockage? Answer time, folks!

I’d like to begin with clearing the biggest misconception about heart blockage - it is not a disease. On the contrary, it is one of the major symptoms of coronary artery disease and among the most prominent signs of deteriorating heart health. For those who are not familiar with heart-related medical terms, coronary arteries are those arteries which wrap around the heart. The symptoms of heart blockage manifest as a result of oxygen not reaching the heart muscles, whether for a short time or a longer duration. In such a case, the person suffering from a heart block experiences pain in the chest which is known as Angina pain. Heart blockage can be complete or partial, depending upon the time duration for which the heart does not receive oxygen. Complete heart blockage can lead to the death of the person suffering from it.

Causes of Liver Damage

Causes of Liver Damage

Do you know what are the various causes of liver damage? This article here, will give you all the information that you need about the causes that can damage our liver. Some knowledge about the causes can help us prevent liver damage.

The liver, as we know, is an important organ which is required for survival. This organ is located in the upper right hand side part of the abdomen and behind the rib cage. The functions of the liver are really important for the digestion of the food and, if the liver stops working properly, then there's no way to compensate for that. It secretes a substance called the bile which helps in the digestion of the fat that comes along with the digested food. It also neutralizes the toxins that enter our body through the food we consume, and thus purifies the blood. The liver is also the first place or source from where the fetus, during it's first trimester, draws red blood cells and it also plays an important role in the synthesis of amino acids. Besides this, there are several other functions of the liver which prove that without the liver, our body would have been a meeting point of several health problems.

She looks at the humble beginnings of OJ in this nation (and the forces that "propelled orange juice to prominence, including a surplus of oranges that plagued Florida during most of the twentieth century and the army's need to provide vitamin C to troops overseas during World War II"), but perhaps most compelling is the science, most recently studies from UC Davis, that shows a link between consuming high levels of fructose (found in fruit juices) and heart disease and Type 2 diabetes.

Feel Tired? It Could Be Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a condition that usually first appears in women from their early 20s to mid-40s. Its symptoms include:

Memory or concentration impairment

Sore throat

Tender glands in the neck or underarms

Muscle pain; joint pain without swelling or redness

Headaches (new or different from previous headaches)

Unrefreshing sleep

Fatigue lasting more than 24 hours after exercise

If you have been experiencing at least four of these symptoms for the past six months or more, you may have CFS and should see a physician for an evaluation.

While there are no specific tests for CFS, there are tests that may help eliminate other diseases from the list of possibilities. Your doctor will check for the common causes of fatigue such as anemia, low thyroid, diabetes, drug side effects, kidney disease, sleep apnea, depression, and a few rare diseases.

Can Exercise Break Up A Relationship?

Do you crawl out of bed at the crack of dawn for a big workout, coming home only after your significant other has left for work? Does he? If so, you might want to take a look at the emergence of the "exercise widow"...

According to an article in the Wall Street Journal, therapists are seeing more couples come in for counseling due to exercise. Specifically: one-half of the couple is in constant physical training and it's causing major cracks in the relationship.

Apparently, the non-training half of the couple often feels resentful of the time spent away while training. There's also an insecurity risk, reports WSJ: "If one partner gets a new, buff appearance and a new circle of buff acquaintances, romantic possibilities can open up-and give the other spouse good reason to feel insecure about his or her own physique."

Electronic cigarrete to enjoy.

Jos? Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, the spanish prime ministe was not too long ago found smoking a traditional cigarette not and electronic cigarettes on his presidential plane that shows that it's not because the Spanish elite doesn't like smoking. Rather, the smoking ban is playing an unique political role. Ban something is what the state can do these days. While the Spanish state may be impotent to have an affect on the economic crisis, the smoking ban is the kind of move it can take to 'improve the public health' and increase its authority. Greece - the other European country feeling the brunt of the economic crisis and having its economic policy dictated by commissioners in Brussels - also passed a smoking ban a short time ago. The Greek prime minister said that the ban would 'change people's perceptions and behaviour, and improve their quality of life'.

Genius Healthy Living Advice: Whether It's Yoga, Cooking or Knitting--Practice Something

I wanted to share a little nugget of healthy living wisdom with you that really hit home for me. It's this simple little advice that I think has big life payoffs...

****

Kate Hanley over at Crazy Sexy Life wrote about the value of practicing something. "I define practice as 'what you do with regularity, even when you don't feel like doing anything else,'" she writes. "I firmly believe that incorporating some sort of practice, or activity, into your normal routine--whether it's yoga, running, knitting, cooking, walking, drawing, cleaning, or anything else you can absorb yourself in--is one the best ways (if not the best way) to help you feel a little calmer, a little clearer, more able to deal with whatever life brings."

Human Anatomy – Penis

Human Anatomy – Penis

Men’s sex organ is the penis, through which the male body discharges semen for reproduction. It is also the organ through which the body ejects urine as waste.

A penis becomes erect when a man becomes aroused sexually. Nerves compel blood to rush into the penis, particularly to a columnar tissue called the corpus cavernosum. Only then would the penis “harden” or undergo an erection.

Blood also fills up the corpus spongiosum, a spongy tissue in the penis which encompasses the urethra, the passageway for urine. Filled with blood, the corpus spongiosum keeps the urethra open even as the penis stays erect.

Few of the Various Means of Diabetes Treatment

To prevent any kind of disease one needs to know its precautions and to understand the growth of a disease one needs to know the symptoms. Now how to go about the treatment procedure? Well to know how to treat one need to know what is actually wrong in the body.

What is diabetes?

If one needs to explain the disease called diabetes it can be said that it is a disorder of the pancreas. In our body pancreas gives out insulin. It is a fluid kind of thing. Some body cells are supposed to absorb this insulin. When these body cells do not work appropriately the whole system gets affected. The pancreas keeps on producing insulin. It reaches a level after which it no longer can produce any more insulin. Even the liver faces serious troubles. It discharges glucose. But when the pancreas faces the disorder even it keeps on producing glucose. As a result in the blood the glucose level increases a lot. The whole thing gets messed up. As a result the disease diabetes occurs.

Human Anatomy – Vagina

A vagina is the female sex organ. As the organ of sexual response, it accommodates the penis during copulation. The infant goes through it during childbirth. Furthermore, the organ serves as the passageway for menstrual fluids from the uterus.

A vagina links to the uterus, a pear-shaped hollow organ situated between the rectum and the bladder. The cervix, which serves as the channel between the vagina and uterus, projects into the vagina.

External structures, known as the vulva and labia, front the vagina. A superficial layer of tissue, called the hymen, partly constricts the vaginal opening. But it can be torn apart by sexual activities and exercising.

Chlamydia

Chlamydia

Symptoms and treatment

Caused by the bacterium chlamydia trachomatis, chlamydia is the most-reported bacterial sexually transmitted disease (STD) in America. Despite this statistic, chlamydia is referred to as a "silent" STD, since, due to a lack of symptoms, three-quarters of women and one-half of men who are infected are not aware they have it. Unfortunately, it is these mild or absent symptoms that allows chlamydia to silently damage a woman's reproductive system. Since the damage is irreversible and can lead to infertility, every sexually active person should be aware of the subtle symptoms of this destructive STD.
